Mescal Bean
Description
The meascalbean plant belongs to the genus Dermatophyllum, species of shrubs and small trees of the pea family native to southwestern North America. This plant has oval shaped leaves, clusters of purple flowers, and bright red beans. All parts of the mescal bean plant are poisonous, however the beans are particularly toxic, especially to small children, and can be lethal if consumed.

Mescal bean plants contain the alkaloid cytisine, which can cause serious breathing problems and is known to be lethal to most animals. Keep your pet away from mescal bean plants.
